The Ministry of Finance has approved the release of funds that will be used to purchase 120 vehicles for the Malawi Police.
Speaking to Parliament last week, Homeland Security Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda said that the vehicles would ease mobility challenges which negatively impacts police operations.
Chimwendo Banda indicated that the ministry asked for 300 vehicles but the Treasury authorised the purchase of 120 vehicles, while admitting that most police posts and stations were in dilapidated state.
The Police in the country are seeing various improvements, as last week, the Chinese Government completed construction and has handed over the K188 million Nsipe Police Post in Ntcheu, received by Vice-President Saulos Chilima on behalf of Nsipe communities. Chinese Ambassador Liu Hongyang outlined that the police post has cells, an administrative block, victim support unit, kitchen and officers’ houses. On the other hand, the ambassador also donated furniture, a refrigerator and five motorbikes to ease officers’ mobility.
