Upon the delay of establishing power at Mbongozi Hydro Power Project in Ntchisi, the Minister of Energy Newton Kambala has warned that the government will engage a new investor should the project prolong further.
The current investor of the project, HE Power, has had the last 2 years to complete the project, as the minister gave a final deadline of 4 months to complete the project. “We would like him [the investor] to speed up processes so that they reach financial closure and if that cannot happen in the next three to four months” said Kambala, stating that failure to meet the deadline will result in the government looking for another investor.
During a tour of the power plant, Kambala insisted on the project’s completion as the country is currently struggling to ensure adequate power supply. The power plant is expected to generate 41 megawatts (MW).
