For Malawian citizens that are outside of Malawi and are wondering about the price cut or price hikes that happened in 2018, Bizmalawi compiled some of the various price hikes and price cuts that happened in 2018 so far, with 5 weeks remaining into 2019.
Sugar
In April 2018, Illovo Sugar announced a K45.65 increase in the price of both white and brown sugar; the latter at K823.87 from K778.22, and the former selling at K822.72 from K778.22.
TNM tarriff
In October 2018, TNM hiked the tarriff of calls to Southafrica, charging K165 per minute, from K92.
Bus fare
In October 2018, the Minibus Owners Association of Malawi, hiked bus fares, in response to fuel price hike. Most areas have a K50 increase while others have K100, while awaiting for the Association to confirm.
Maize
In September 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, announced the slashed price of maize, from k250 per Kg to K170 per Kg.
Fuel
In November 2018, the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority hiked the prices of Petrol, Diesel and Paraffin, citing shipping price changes, Malawi Kwacha inflation and more. Petrol is now selling at K990.30 per litre from K932.50, registering a 6% price increment, while Diesel went from K935.60 to K990.40 per litre, registering a 5.8% price increment and Paraffin at K785.00 per litre from K755.30, registering a 3.93% price increment.
Some of the price hikes have not been explained, leaving customers having a lot of questions.
