The demonstrations aimed at forcing the government to pay teachers’ December salaries, saw damaged property in Mzuzu and Lilongwe, after protesters stoned vehicles including Axa buses and property like Sana Cash and Carry.
The protests after government withheld the December payroll, saying the teachers did not submit their national identity card details as required.
On the other hand, Teachers Union of Malawi Mzuzu City member, Irene Jere, said the strike will not be called off until all the 5,000 teachers have received their salaries. Also, learners from Madisi in Dowa were marching to Mponela as lessons have been disrupted.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Principal Secretary, Justin Saidi, has promised that the teachers will be paid.
