According to VGchartz, a third-party analytical website which tracks sales data throughout the games industry, PS5 sold between 2.1 and 2.5 million units worldwide on its two staggered launch dates. In a statement, Sony confirmed by declaring the largest launch in PlayStation history, surpassing PS4’s 2.1 million units in its first two weeks in 2013.
The PlayStation 5 was in limited supply immediately upon launch. Other vendors took advantage of the shortage, attempting to sell the console for thousands of dollars, instead of the announced $399. During the system’s first week of release in Japan, 103,901 standard consoles were sold, and 14,181 Digital Editions were sold. A combined total of 118,082 PS5s were sold in Japan during its launch week making it the best-selling console in the country for that week.
“We want to thank gamers everywhere for making the PS5 launch our biggest console launch ever,” said part of the statement by Sony, “Demand for PS5 is unprecedented, so we wanted to confirm that more PS5 inventory will be coming to retailers before the end of the year – please stay in touch with your local retailers.”
