Malawi has tripled her rice harvests, as figures from the Africa Institute for Corporate Citizenship (AICC) have shown that Malawi’s rice production has increased from 2,200 kilogrammes (kg) per hectare to 6,500 kgs per hectare.
The report has attributed the massive harvest increase to farming principals that were taught by Systems of Rice Intensification (SRI), a program used in growing productive and robust plants.
“These good agriculture practices have led to proper crop growth of rice plants; hence, leading to improvement in rice yields. Malawi rice, famous for its fragrance, is a household name in Southern and Eastern Africa. This has increased its potential to be one of the exportable crops globally” said AICC Project Manager for Market Access, Leonard Chimwaza.
Farmers are guaranteed to reap from their harvests as admarc announced that the gateway price Polished rice is at K550 per Kilogram whilst unpolished is selling at K250 per Kilogram.
