Mzuzu coffee has landed on an export market for coffee in Russia, while the firm’s Chief Executive Officer, Bernard Kaunda, confirmed that 4 tonnes of the commodity have already been exported.
“We have for the first time exported to Russia about 4 tonnes but that is normally the beginning and we pick up from there.” said Kaunda. Regardless, coffee farmers are negatively affected by the fall of prices on the international market recently, and there is uncertainty on how they will perform next season.
However, there is hope as Mzuzu coffee has markets in parts of Europe, Asia, United States and within Africa. Coffee is one of Malawi cash crops. Also, a recent study showed that Malawi exports 1,000 metric tonnes of coffee a year which is grown on 1,500 hectares of land, earning the country around $3 million (about K2.3 billion).
