The South African Cabin Crew (SACCA) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) have given a notice to the South African Airways (SAA), announcing a 48 hour strike. To avoid customers from being disrupted, SAA has resolved to cancel flights scheduled for 15-16 November.
A statement by SAA partly reads, “This industrial action affects South African Airways flights series #001-
#999 only and impact flights at Mango (SA • ‘2999)
or our domestic and regional airline partners. South African Express (SA – #1999), Airlink (SA – #8999) or other codeshare partners with series (SA #7000 — #999).”
In the statement by the SAA Executive Vice President for North America, Todd M. Neuman, SAA has committed to negotiate with the labor groups and address their concerns. NUMSA General Secretary Irvin Jim, informed the press that the strike is to seek protection of the employees interests, should SAA be privatised.
