The Salima Sugar Company Limited (SSCL) has said it managed to triple its sugar output in the last growing season, from 4000 metric tonnes in 2018 to 13,000 metric tonnes in 2019.
The above was revealed when Irrigation Minister, Charles Mchacha, toured the factory last Friday, as SSCL and Greenbelt Authority Acting Chief Executive Officer, Amon Mluwira outlined the company’s milestones. Mchacha was pleased to learn that the facility benefits 3500 Malawians, as the company has 6000 hactares but has only managed to cultivate sugar on 2000 hactares.
Mluwira outlined that as the industry already has players in the sugar sector, SSCL has brought competition on the market. “Competition is healthy as it benefits the consumer in the form of improved quality as well as reduced prices,” Mluwira said.
Looking forward, SSCL is expected to produce 26,000 tonnes of sugar this year, which is about 260,000 metric tonnes of sugarcane.
