The General Manager for Malawi Mangoes, Charlie Leaper, revealed that besides exporting to Italy, India and the United Kingdom, there is also high demand for Malawi Mangoes products in Singapore and Hong Kong.
The above was revealed during the Minister of Irrigation and Water Development’s visit to Malawi Mangoes, about the same time he visited Salima Sugar company in Salima. The companies are beneficiaries of the Greenbelt Authority, as they partake in over 2200 hectares under active irrigation. The Irrigation Minister, Charles Mchacha, applauded the progress made from the Greenbelt Authority. “We cannot continue to rely on rain-fed agriculture in the face of the damaging impact of climate change.” he said, “The decision by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to make the ministry of Irrigation and Water Development a standalone ministry demonstrates his resolve to turn Malawi into Africa’s food basket.”
Malawi Mangoes has so far generated about $ 5 million in foreign revenue through its fresh and dried products. The company started its operations in 2015 and has over 200 permanent employees. During peak periods, it engages up to 1000 workers.
