During a tour of Smedi Business Incubation Centre, the Parliamentary Committee on Industry, Trade and Tourism has acknowledged and hailed Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute (Smedi).
The committee’s chairperson Simplex Banda said that Smedi is doing a commendable job that contributes to the development of the country by providing technical support to people. True enough, Smedi has made strides, as in April, Smedi launched service charter that promotes efficiency and effective delivery of services. Smedi chief executive officer Rhodrick Chattaika said that the charter is an assurance to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that the institution will offer some of its services for free as it strives to develop small businesses.
Also speaking during the tour, Chattaika thanked the parliamentary committee, saying the tour will solve some of the problems highlighted. “The incubation centre aims at turning non-performing businesses and cooperatives into viable enterprises; to graduate entrepreneurs who will contribute to local and national economic growth as well as add value to local resources such as tomatoes, cassava, mangoes, gemstones and waste,” he said.
