It has been established that ‘someone’ has been (allegedly) collecting rentals from government properties and keeping the funds to themselves, as the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has outlined that government properties, (like the MRA Offices among others) paid their rentals to an unnamed politician.
“Someone is collecting rentals for these properties and this person is not acting on behalf of government” says HRDC Chairperson Gift Trapence, in a letter addressed to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) “HRDC would like your office to investigate this case and if indeed rentals were being collected, we urge that the money should be claimed back.”
The letter, penned on 21 September 2020 follows after confirmed news of the government owing billions in rentals, as the Ministry of Lands alone owes K13.5 billion, calling on the Transport and Public Infrastructure Committee of Parliament to help in lobbying for more funding to pay for the sum.
