According to a local horticulture firm known as Synthesis Agriculture, there is a growing international demand for  watermelons, as South Africa is calling for up to 180,000 metric tonnes a week.

Synthesis Agriculture Managing Director, Dickson Kilowe, outlined that the company aims to recruit 150 farmers to produce the fruit to meet the new demand.

The MD outlined that last year, the company signed a contract with a buyer in South Africa, who assured to buy despite the coronavirus pandemic. Last Month the company partnered with Agriworth Incubator, a Zambia based agriculture company, to  train one hundred Malawians farmers on watermelon production. Interested farmers and inspiring farmers were trained on Watermelon modern farming, watermelon farm management, watermelon pest and disease management, Watermelon Opportunity and marketing and Watermelon land preparation and many more.
