Tanzanian Port Authorities have called on Malawian businesses to use the Dar es Salam Port when importing and exporting their merchandise.
Tanzanian Port Authority Director of Marketing, Francisca Muindi said the Tazara Corridor was beneficial for Malawi imports and exports, considering that the port is cost-effective. In April, when Tanzanian President John Magufuli visited Malawi, it was revealed that Malawi does not make use of the port as much.
MCCL Logistics Manager, Gerald Ndowera, outlined that traders that would passing their cargo via the Northern Corridor stood to benefit from reduced charges of up to 25%. “What used to happen was that the flow of traffic was one way from Dar es Salaam to Mbeya and Karonga. This meant that the cost of freight was high as the transporters were not carrying anything on the way back.”
