The Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has demanded that teachers should receive Covid-19 risk allowances when schools reopen this year. According to TUM secretary general Charles Kumchenga, the above was presented to the Ministry of Education’s Task Force on Reopening of Schools in April this year, three months before Chakwera’s announcement on Saturday.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Education Principal Secretary Chikondano Mussa has since confirmed about the development above, outlining that the demand, among others, are still under discussion.
In similar news, Malawi Prisons’ junior officers demanded to be provided with personal protective equipment (PPEs) and risk allowances last week. Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, Malawi has seen similar demands as health workers, game rangers, truck drivers and the Malawi Police have also threatened or implemented strikes on the same matter.
