A group of concerned teachers recently briefed the media last week, stating that they will not return to class unless the government gives them risk allowances in the face of Covid-19.
Pressure mounts on the government to provide risk allowances for various civil servants, as around K272 million has been allocated to risk allowances in the last 2 months. The chairperson for the group of teachers, Staffuel Chitukuta, outlined that as school staff will be sharing the same learning and teaching materials with hundreds of students, they are exposed to the risk of contracting the virus.
Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, Malawi has seen similar demands as health workers, game rangers, truck drivers and the Malawi Police have also threatened or implemented strikes on the same matter.
