As tobacco selling season approaches fast, farmers are in panic considering the announcement by buyers, stating that they will buy less tobacco in 2019, compared to the prior year. Figures show that more than 30 kg being rejected this year, due to the announced lowered tobacco demand.
As the Agricultural Research and Extension Trust (Aret) is in talks with the buying companies on the matter, Tobacco Control Commission has stepped in to negotiate with the companies to buy more tobacco.
In an interview with local newspaper The Daily Times, TCC Chief Executive Officer Kaisi Sadal disclosed that the buying companies are considering the plea.
Nonsmoking campaigns have pressured buying companies to reduce demand, as firms like USA’s Food and Drug Administration have imposed a limit on cigarette sales, especially the menthol type. As the pressure grows globally, farmers on the local market are strongly urged to diversify.
