In the ninth week of the Tobacco market season, sales have reached $111.6 million, representing a 26% increment from sales made during the same week last season.

According to the spokesperson of the Ministry of Agriculture  Grecian Lungu ,the current prices being offered on the market are much better than last year. “So we anticipate more revenues than that of last year,” Lungu said.

However, the  President of the Tobacco Association of Malawi (Tama) Trust Abiel Kalima Banda said this season’s earnings will not match last year’s. “We projected way higher volumes than what we have actually produced. Going around farmer communities, you find that the season is going to an end as most farmers have sold most of their tobacco. I believe in the next five weeks we will be closing the market,” Banda said.
