Figures from AHL Group have shown that Malawi has made $67.6 million (about K53 billion) in tobacco sales during the last six weeks of the tobacco market.
During the same period last week, the market registered sales that were $17.9 million lower, as this year’s improvement has been attributed to good quality leaf.
Meanwhile, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plans to ban menthol as a characterizing flavor in cigarettes and ban all characterizing flavors altogether, based on evidence establishing the addictive properties and harm of such products. Should the ban be passed, the tobacco market in Malawi will be negatively affected as there will be less tobacco bought.
