World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC) figures show that at 7.7 percent total tourism contribution to GDP, the sector’s economic activities generated by hotels, travel agents, airlines and other passenger transportation services failed to grow from 2017 to 2019.
The static record for 2 years has been addressed as worrisome since besides the low contribution towards GDP, the sector cannot provide jobs for itself as figures show that employment remains at 6.7 percent of total employment at about 525 000.
The Malawi Government recognizes tourism as a priority sector that can be used as a vehicle for economic growth and poverty alleviation as outlined in the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS) III.
MGDS III recognises that if developed, the tourism sector can promote job creation in both urban and rural areas.
