According to a preliminary study by the Malawi Tourism Council (MTC), shows that since coronavirus cases were first registered in April, the tourism sector has lost about K40.5 billion in potential revenue.
MTC board chairperson Tim Van Der Linden is insisting on requesting a bailout package by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, as he has written to the ministry, outlining that the industry can rebound quicker if the package is provided for. While the tourism council laid off 35000 employees, the Director of Parks and Wildlife Brighton Kunchedwa has confirmed that Vwaza Game Reserve and Nyika National Park are planned to close as the two are posting losses amidst declining tours attributed to the coronavirus pandemic. According to the Director, the tourist attraction sites used to make more than K1 million a week but are now making K65,000 a week.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism Principal Secretary Isaac Katopola, told The Nation newspaper that depending on resource availability, the government will review and assess how much of what is being requested by the MTC can be provided.
