Speaking in parliament in response to questions regarding what Government is doing to construct more roads and bridges, Minister of Transport and Public Works Ralph Jooma said over 30 bridges have already been constructed and the wish is to construct over 70 bridges in rural areas.
Jooma said his ministry is upgrading over 72 bridges throughout the country. He mentioned Kapeni timber decked bridge along the Matale-Bevu road in Ntcheu which is being upgraded to concrete level. “The Ministry of Transport has ensured that all districts are covered as one way of making sure that no place in Malawi is impassable.” said Jooma.
The country has been under road reconstructions , which have been long overdue, not to mention other roads that have been destroyed by floods. Meanwhile, the latest report by the Construction Sector Transparency Initiative (Cost) Malawi has exposed publicly funded construction projects in Malawi, for having irregularities in procurement. For instance, out of the 4 projects by the Roads Authority were awarded to one locally registered international contractor. According to the report, more research needs to be done as to why one contractor predominates in the road sector.
