The High Court Judge Jack N’riva has set his ruling to discharge two injunctions against Truck Drivers Association, for tomorrow, 18th December.
Recently, the Attorney General, Kalekeni Kaphale, obtained injunctions against Truck Drivers Association, curbing them from going on strike, fearing that fuel scarcity will negatively affect the economy. In a sequence of events, their strike follows after their employers refuse to increase their salaries, unless the government ensures that local firms are profiting in the business, since currently business is offered to foreigners. Policies with most Sadc region countries stipulate that 70% of imported goods be carried by local transporters and 30% by foreign transporters, which is not being practiced in Malawi according to the Transporters Association of Malawi (TAM) chairperson, Layton Dzombe.
Last week, Kaphale obtained an injunction against the strike that was scheduled for Lilongwe, Mzuzu, Mchinji, Kalonga and Chitipa. The strike was scheduled for December 2 after employers of the drivers refused to pay the drivers K100,000 as monthly salary as agreed with the government last month.
