Currently, the U.S. Embassy is scheduled to remain open during the nationwide demonstrations are planned to be held at border posts and airports. However, the Embassy has advised that the U.S. citizen community to avoid travel in and out of Malawi throughout the week of August 26 – August 30, 2019.
The demonstrations are planned to happen at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, Chileka International Airport in Blantyre and at land border crossings at Karonga (Songwe border), Mchinji, Mwanza and Ntcheu from Monday, August 26 – Friday, August 30, 2019.
The notice has urged US citizens to consider re-scheduling flights in and out of Malawi during the week of August 26 – August 30, 2019.
The Embassy has further urged US citizens to do the following;
Ensure you have emergency food and water supplies at home.
- Ensure you have a fully charged cell phone.
- Regularly check your phone and email for updates regarding the security environment.
- Exercise caution when moving around all areas of Malawi.
- If you see a barrier or individuals blocking your path, turn around and find an alternate route.
- If you are unable to depart, keep your windows up and your doors locked, seek shelter if needed.
- Avoid large crowds and always leave yourself room to maneuver.
