According to Grain Traders Association of Malawi (Gtam), some vendors who it says, are buying agricultural commodities at lower than, the government-set minimum prices. The findings are from a survey conducted by Gtam president, Grace Mijiga Mhango.
The findings come one month after the Minister of Agriculture, Francis Kasaila, announced gate prices for agro products, on which he sternly warned against overpricing, but Mhango said there is a lack of proper enforcement procedures by the government.
On the other hand, Mhango attributes the low prices to the lack of integrity among vendors and some companies. “It is not fair for our members who have buying licenses to be buying at the set minimum prices and others are left scot free after buying at these low prices,” Mhango said.
