The Secretary to the Treasury, was speaking on the above at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to interface operations systems involving MRA, DRTSS and the Police.

He urged Malawians to always make prior verification with the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DRTSS) and Malawi Police Service (MPS) before purchasing a motor vehicle even if the vehicle is bearing a local registration number stressing that sometimes the vehicle may have been stolen or smuggled into the country.

The signing took place at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning & Development headquarters and it was presided over by the Secretary to the Treasury himself.

In August 2018, South African Police Minister Bheki Cele estimated that 300 cars had been smuggled into Malawi and he would spearhead an operation on tracing the hot wheels.

Having the International Criminal Police (Interpol) storming the roads of Malawi, one would indeed have to think twice about purchasing a car hastily.
