Vice President Saulos Chilima has said the Nsanje In-land Port project is still in consideration, as discussions are underway.

While inspecting Nsanje Train Station, Bangula Railway Station and the East Bank Road, Chilima said that prioritizing rail transport does not mean the in-land port has not been abandoned. “The good news is that we have decided to use some infrastructure for rail, which is a plus. Because the rail is moving at a much faster pace than the actual project there [in Nsanje District], let’s use the rail and use the existing infrastructure,” said Chilima.

Earlier this year, the Tonse Alliance Administration outlined its goal of reviving the water and rail sectors in transport. “It is our intention to revive rail and water transport systems because we believe that these modes of transport can help us reduce the cost of fuel as its haulage will be by ship and train, which operate at very low cost” said Deputy Minister of Transport and Public Works Nancy Mdooko.
