Vice-President Saulos Chilima has called out Mzuzu City Council (MCC) for poor waste management, suggesting that the council should strongly consider launching a Keep Mzuzu City Clean initiative.
According to Chilima, the initiative will involve residents in being responsible for the city’s waste management. In February this year, a press briefing organised by MCC outlined that the city’s sanitation was at its worst since there has been no dumping site after the closure of Silo dumping site. The Mayor of the city, Brian Kondwani Nyasulu, explained that the temporal resolve is to reopen the closed facility which may worsen the situation.
During the same period, 15 ward councilors of Mzuzu were called to the City Council to answer for K91 million, as the councillors felt the funds have been misappropriated. During the meeting, the councillors inquired how K91 million from the Infrastructure Development Fund (IDF) had been used, following that the council secretariat allegedly received the money on December 31 last year but the councillors were not notified for approval.
