A report shows that government ministries, departments and agencies (MDA) in Malawi owe the board a collective sum of K21bn.
Topping the list is Malawi Defence Force (MDF) and Malawi Police Service (MPS) that are in arrears with the Blantyre Water Board, Lilongwe Water Board, Northern Region Water Board, Central Region Water Board and Southern Region Water Board.
According to the report, MDF is yet to settle its K11.4bn bill, as MPS has a K4bn to pay. State Residences also add to the sum, as they have registered a bill of K3bn while Prisons have an outstanding bill K1.7bn.
Records show that the southern region water board suffers most of these unpaid fees, as K7bn alone is owed to it, out of the total K21bn.
The above bills and more, where addressed by the Water Employees Trade Union of Malawi (Wetum), demanding the ministries, departments and agencies to pay for the bills within 21 days in November 2018, a warning that was taken lightly. Evidently, the circulation report is a step to action.
