45 year old Martin Hobbs holds the world record of the longest solo swim in a lake, swimming 361 miles across Lake Malawi for 54 days in a row. Hobbs had broken the record already amidst his swim, but decided to complete 361 miles, which is actually Lake Malawi’s full length, therefore having 2 world records under his belt.
“I’m not going to lie, I’m terrified of the crocodiles” says Hobbs, who luckily did not come across the jaws of the crocodiles, as his team was beside him at a distance. Covering 7 miles a day, Hobbs said that thinking of his next meal or chocolate bar is what helped him stay focused.
Hobbs dedicated the swim to raising money for charity, specifically Smile Foundation; a South African charity that helps children with cleft palates and other facial deformities.
Hobbs plans to give a series of motivational speeches and possibly write a book as a way to raise more money for Smile. So far, the Solo Swimmer team has raised $10,000. Hobbs hopes to reach half a million South African Rand, which is about $35,000.
