The Karonga Youth for Development and Peace, a consortium of youthful entrepreneurs, artisans and contractors has called on companies working in oil and gas, mining and tourism industry to invest in the district to open up job opportunities for the youths.
Executive Director for Karonga Youth for Development and Peace, Aaron Mwenelupembe said this Thursday during a press conference in Karonga that most young people in the district are jobless and as a result some authorities take advantage to use them as agents of violence.
‘‘We have a lot of young people who are jobless and we are calling for more companies to invest in the district as a way of creating employment opportunities for the youths.
“We need companies such as the oil and gas, mining and tourism industries to come into the district in order to offer more job opportunities,’’ he pointed out.
Spokesperson for the Consortium, Mary Siwale advised the youths in the country to refrain from violent acts as the country prepares for the 2019 Tripartite Elections.
“Let us not be involved in acts which can make us become in conflict with law. We should champions of peace and unity if we are to be trust worthy to the nation,” she observed.
Karonga is one of the violence-hotspot areas in the country due to chieftaincy wrangles, accusations of witchcraft, and political indifference.
Meanwhile, government is implementing an entrepreneurship program through community technical colleges across the country to ensure that youths acquire skills either for employment or to be employed.
