After Zimbabwe raised its fuel prices to $3 per liter in what has been known as the world’s highest fuel price, the Zimbabwean government issued an informal internet ban, which local telecommunications company Econet confirmed.
The internet is now restored but partially, as social media sites have been blocked. In a statement by Econet, the company revealed that the internet is back ‘under a directive that the Facebook, YouTube, Whats App, Twitter will remain closed until further notice.’
The nation’s transport sector has been affected as roads have been inaccessible due to the protests, while the blocking of the internet and social media has also affected business, government and media firms which rely on the technology for their day to day operations.
