Vendors at Mpondabwino Market in Zomba City have been forced to conduct businesses from inside the premises, as the City’s Council has been removing vendors from outside the premises; an action which has damaged their property. In response, the vendors went to raise their complaints to Deputy Mayor for Zomba City Council, Councillor, Anthony Gonani.
According to the vendors, the call to operate from inside the market is justified but there is currently no space inside the market. The Deputy Mayor confirmed that concerned vendors presented their concerns to him. He promised them that the Council would find a solution to the problem as they would meet all concerned parties. “We have received their grievances and will meet both parties today at 3pm to map the way forward,” Gonani pointed out.
The country’s city councils have been enforcing that vendors operate only in authorized areas, as Lilongwe and Blantyre have also seen such changes last year.
